THIS TRIAL VERSION
This is a fully functional trial version of SurfWatch which expires after 15 days. We recommend that you read the more complete documentation in the trial section of our web site at http://www.surfwatch.com. After your trial period is over, SurfWatch filtering will no longer be active on your computer.
It is important to know that this trial version:
• allows you one free filter update, which gives you the most up to date SurfWatch filters.
• does not allow you to install over a previously installed version of SurfWatch. You must first remove the older version of SurfWatch, and then install the trial version.
• no longer provides active SurfWatch filtering on your computer after the 15 day trial period is over. You may purchase a full working version of SurfWatch through our web site at http://www.surfwatch.com or by calling 1-800-458-6600.
• should be completely removed before installing the standard version.

GETTING STARTED
System Requirements
You need the following to run SurfWatch:
• A Macintosh or Power Macintosh with 5 MB hard drive space and at least 8MB RAM
• System 7.1 or higher and Mac TCP version 2.06 or later (68k or PowerPC) or Open Transport (TCP/IP) 1.1 or later (for PowerPC only)
Note: VERSIONS OF OPEN TRANSPORT OLDER THAN 1.1 DO NOT WORK WITH SURFWATCH. SurfWatch runs native in an Open Transport environment on a Power Macintosh. If you are using a 68K Macintosh system, you must use Mac TCP for SurfWatch to work properly.
• Internet software (web browser, newsreader, FTP client)
• Direct access to the Internet via modem (SLIP/PPP), ISDN, or high-speed link
• The SurfWatch disk or files
Before You Begin
Know how to use the mouse and navigate the Macintosh desktop.
Be able to connect your computer to the Internet
If you are installing your Internet software for the first time, be sure you can connect to the Internet and use your browser before you attempt to install SurfWatch. It is important that your Internet connection work independently of the SurfWatch software.
Make a backup copy of SurfWatch
Copy the SurfWatch disk or files to a back-up floppy disk.
During Installation
Install the SurfWatch Files
As SurfWatch is installed, you will create your own password. Be sure to take note of this password. You need it to turn SurfWatch off, to remove it from your computer, and to customize your SurfWatch filters.
Update Your Filters
You must be connected to the Internet in order to download the latest SurfWatch filters.
After Installation
SurfWatch filtering is active each time you start your computer
If you would like to turn SurfWatch filtering off, use the SurfWatch Control Panel. If you would like to customize your Internet filtering, run the SurfWatch Manager application.
Do not tamper with any SurfWatch files
If you want to remove SurfWatch, run the SurfWatch Installer program and select Remove SurfWatch from the pop-up menu. This properly removes SurfWatch and all of its secure files. You can then remove SurfWatch Manager by throwing it in the Trash.
INSTALLING SURFWATCH
The following steps take you through the process of installing and updating SurfWatch.
If you click Quit or Cancel in any of the SurfWatch installation dialog boxes, the installation process will stop and the program will not be installed.
Note: Some anti-virus or security software may interfere with the installation of SurfWatch. Before installing and updating SurfWatch, you may want to disable this software and restart your computer. If the software is not turned off after restarting your computer, restart it with the extensions off.
Install the SurfWatch Files
Begin the Installation
1. Double click the SurfWatch® Trial Installer icon.
2. Read the SurfWatch Installer Welcome screen.
Click Continue to proceed.
3. When the SurfWatch Installer dialog box appears, verify that Install SurfWatch is selected from the pop-up menu.
Click Install.
4. Next, read the License Agreement.
Click Agree to continue with the installation. If you click Disagree, you return to the SurfWatch Installer window where you may click Quit.
5. Before copying the files, SurfWatch checks to see if there are any other applications running. If so, SurfWatch quits them after allowing you to save your work.
Register Your Software
6. In the registration dialog box, enter your personal information.
Enter Your Personal SurfWatch Password
7. Your personal SurfWatch password is used to turn SurfWatch off, customize SurfWatch Manager, and remove SurfWatch.
Type in the password you choose and click OK.
8. Next, re-enter your password for verification. Type your password using the same characters you did the first time.
Click OK.
If you make a mistake, you are given the opportunity to type your password again for verification, or start the installation process over.
Finishing the Installation
9. You will see a progress bar that displays the progress of the file installation.
10. At the end of installation, you are told that SurfWatch has been successfully installed and to restart your computer.
Click Restart.
Update Your Filters
The SurfWatch Updater application runs automatically after restart and allows you to update your SurfWatch filters.
It is especially important that you update your filters during installation — this ensures that you start with the most current SurfWatch filters.
If you are operating SurfWatch through a proxy server, you may need to configure SurfWatch first. If you receive an error message while downloading the filters, cancel the process and use SurfWatch Manager to update your filters once it is configured correctly.
Connecting to the Internet
11. When your computer restarts, SurfWatch Updater runs automatically. Click Update to start the update process.
12. You must be connected to the Internet to complete this update. If you are not connected to the Internet, do so now. If necessary, switch to the Finder and connect using your SLIP or PPP software and then return to the SurfWatch Updater window.
Click Connected.
Downloading the Filters
13. Using the Internet, SurfWatch automatically connects your computer to the update server. You will see a series of progress bars as SurfWatch sends your registration information, downloads the filters to your computer, and updates your SurfWatch files.
14. After the update is complete, a dialog box tells you that this is your last update unless you choose to purchase SurfWatch after the trial period ends. You may want to make a note of the purchasing information now so you can visit our web site at the end of your trial period.
Completing the Update
15. Your computer is now protected by SurfWatch.
Note: Store the SurfWatch disk in at least one safe place along with your personal password. This is important because you do not want someone else using your password to change the status of SurfWatch without your knowledge.
SURFWATCH MANAGER
After completing the installation process, you will have a copy of SurfWatch Manager on your hard drive. SurfWatch Manager is a powerful tool which gives you the ability to make SurfWatch meet your specific needs. This program allows you to choose from several filtering options and customize the SurfWatch filters. For best results using SurfWatch Manager, we recommend that you read the information available from the trial section of our web site at http://www.surfwatch.com.
REMOVING SURFWATCH
After 15 days, your trial version will expire and you should remove it from your computer. You may purchase a full working version of SurfWatch through our web site at http://www.surfwatch.com or by calling 1-800-458-6600.
To remove SurfWatch after your trial version has expired, you must run the SurfWatch Installer application.
1. Insert the SurfWatch master disk, and double click the SurfWatch® Trial Installer icon, as you did for installation.
When you see the SurfWatch Installer dialog box, select Remove SurfWatch from the pop-up menu and click Remove.
2. In order to remove SurfWatch from your computer, you must enter your password. Type your password using the exact characters you entered when you created it.
3. After the progress bar completes, you see a message confirming the removal of SurfWatch and telling you how to manually remove SurfWatch Manager and documentation from your startup disk.
4. You are now prompted to restart your computer. After you restart, your computer is no longer protected by SurfWatch.
SURFWATCH COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION
At Ease 2.x
A bug in At Ease 2.x does not allow SurfWatch Updater to run without hanging on startup. Version 3.0 of At Ease fixes this problem. If this problem occurs reboot with extensions off and gain access to the Finder. Remove SurfWatch Updater from the StartUp Items folder and place it somewhere else on your hard drive. Each month you will have to manually run SurfWatch Updater to download the most recent site database by double clicking on the SurfWatch Updater icon.
Conflict Catcher
When running a conflict test with Conflict Catcher, it may give you a message that SurfWatch is causing a conflict. This is generally not the case.
Cyberdog
SurfWatch is not compatible with any version of Cyberdog.
Macintosh System Extension Conflicts
We have tested against numerous Macintosh system and extension configurations however, as new software becomes available, occasional undocumented conflicts may occur. If you have problems with hangs or freezes on restart, these may be related to an extension conflict. Please call our Technical Support department for more information.
News Readers
Most users prefer to build a new list of news groups once they have SurfWatch installed. Some news readers require that you clear the cache or delete preference files before you can build a new list that properly reflects SurfWatch filtering.
PPP Software
You may experience problems using SurfWatch with early system software and certain PPP programs. It is best to upgrade to the most recent versions when possible.
Virus Protection/Security Software
Some virus protection or security software may not allow SurfWatch to install, update, or remove properly. You may need to turn this software off during the installation, updating, and removal processes. Since periodic updates are installed in your computer, you may also need to configure the software to allow these updates to occur.
TCP/IP Error Message
If you make changes to your TCP/IP (Open Transport) Control Panel, you may get an error saying there was a problem reconfiguring. This is actually NOT the case–simply press the Continue button and your changes will be saved properly.
